I have a 5 year plan.

That has been my mantra for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Montreal, I went to an al French elementary school which started the whole progression of planning for the next step. Before going to high school, I took English and Math summer school, to make sure I was not too behind those who went to all English school.

In high school, I played sports, was on student council, competed with top graders to make sure I would get into University. When came time to select “what I’d do when I grow up” … I was blank. The selection process was very practical … What do I see myself doing in five years? … Even more important, What do I like to do? I like math and I like to do things with my hands. Nest question – What will give me a career, not just a job? Amongst the broad reaching choices, I chose Engineering.

The statistics are true – Black and a woman – less than 10% was what I saw when I looked at my undergrad class. But, armed with my 5 year plan, I was following my path with confidence.

I’ve got a degree, and the next choice was … Where should I work? The offers weren’t abundant, but the choice was critical. What is my NEXT 5 year plan, and which opportunity will get me there. A slick flashy travelling consulting career was tempting, but I chose to work with a developer, building big box stores to see and learn how what we design in theory, actually comes to life.

More importantly, direct experience to attain my professional designation as P.Eng – the 5 year plan.

Today, I have all the pieces to sustain a career, and have built the 5 year plan into a self fulfilling perpetual cycle.

You are where you are, because you are supposed to be. Live for where you are, and prepare for where you wan to be.

Never give up on the 5 year plan.
